Tensions Escalate in Yemen

Eurasian Projects 12 January, 2024

How Will the US and UK Attacks on the Houthis Affect the Region?

According to the news published on BBC Turkish on January 12, 2024, the US and Britain organized a joint military operation against the Houthi rebels in Yemen. The attack hit a number of targets in the Houthi-controlled city of Sanaa'.

The Houthis condemned the attacks and announced that they would "retaliate". Iran also "categorically" rejected the attacks, saying they would lead to a further escalation of tensions in the region.

This development could lead to a new wave of conflict in Yemen, where there is already a humanitarian crisis. Experts in the region fear that if the conflict expands, the humanitarian tragedy will deepen and instability in the region will increase.

Possible effects of attacks:

  • Deepening humanitarian crisis: Yemen is already experiencing one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. Millions of people are facing hunger and disease. An escalation of attacks could complicate the delivery of humanitarian aid and deepen the crisis.
  • Increasing regional instability: Yemen is at the center of the regional conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran. An escalation of attacks could involve other actors in the region and further increase regional instability.
  • Rising oil prices: The Red Sea is an important route of world oil trade. An escalation of attacks could disrupt maritime traffic in the Red Sea and cause oil prices to rise.

Here are some of the highlights from the news text:

  • It is noted that the attacks were carried out in retaliation for the Houthis' attack on a Saudi oil tanker on October 7.
  • The attack targeted the production facilities of missiles and drones used by the Houthis.
  • The U.S. and U.K. argue that the attacks were "limited and targeted."
  • Russia and China have described the attacks as "illegitimate."
