Earthquake in the Sea of Marmara!

Eurasian Projects 10 January, 2024

On 2024.01.10 at 20:10:06 an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.7 occurred at a depth of 12.8 km at coordinates of latitude 40.4147 and longitude 28.8730 - Gemlik Bay (Sea of Marmara).

It is likely that the earthquake was felt. You can access information about the places where the earthquake was felt on the website or mobile application of Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory.

Earthquakes with a magnitude of 3.7 usually do not cause damage. Still, don't forget to notify the authorities if you are in the earthquake zone and notice any damage or injuries.

Ways of Protection from Earthquakes:

  • Prepare a contingency plan. In this plan, determine how you will communicate with your family, where you will meet, and what kind of supplies you will collect.
  • Don't forget to make a plan for your pets as well.
  • Prepare an emergency kit. Have food, water, a first aid kit, a flashlight, a radio, and a spare battery with batteries in this bag.
  • Secure your furniture. Fasten bookcases, cabinets and other furniture to the wall that are at risk of tipping over.
  • Place heavy items on the lower shelves. Place heavy items that are at risk of falling on you on the lower shelves.
  • Designate a safe place in your bedroom. Place a sturdy table or chair next to your bed and have a place to take shelter in case of an earthquake.
  • Learn what to do in the event of an earthquake. Do earthquake drills with your family.

What to Do in Case of an Earthquake:

  • Try to stay calm. Don't panic and try to stay calm.
  • Stay away from the dangers around you. Stay away from glass, windows, outward-facing walls and doors, and any items that may fall on you, such as lighting installations or fixtures.
  • Don't run towards stairs or exits. Do not attempt to leave the building during shaking.
  • If you're inside the building , take shelter under a sturdy table or chair. If possible, create a triangle of life.
  • If you're outside the building, go outdoors. Move away from power lines, other buildings, poles, trees, and wall bottoms.
  • If you are driving in a car, turn right and stop. If possible, turn right and stop without blocking the road and stay inside the car.

Possible Istanbul Earthquake:

Istanbul is a city with a high risk of earthquakes, located on an active fault line. Scientists say that a major earthquake is expected to occur in Istanbul soon.

It is very important to be prepared for a possible Istanbul earthquake. You can help protect yourself and your loved ones in a possible earthquake by applying the above-mentioned earthquake protection methods and learning what to do in the event of an earthquake.

You can find information on how to protect yourself against earthquakes on the website of AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency).

For up-to-date information about earthquakes, I recommend you to follow the Kandilli Observatory's website or mobile application.

Remember, being prepared for an earthquake saves lives!
